Pen Sketch

This is kind of a surreal/psychedelic sketch I did when I was bored and killing some time. It's a little different to how I usually do things because I didn't use any references, it's just a bunch of things all thrown together. There are 3 elements that were already on the page before I started drawing what would become the finished piece and I had to work out how to join them so they wouldn't look totally out of place in the end.

I really want to redo this digitally with references where needed so it takes on a more realistic vibe. Probably in color too. We'll see if I get around to it.

Quick Update

Haven't had much time for art due to work commitments so here's a little something I started working on. I started this more as an exercise to keep the chops up but it turned out better than expected. I'll do something with it soon (hopefully). Maybe put a head-dress or helmet on it ... haven't decided yet

Hubcap II

This is a commission for a friend. It's taking some time to finish because I'm using mostly Pigma Micron pens on 300gsm watercolour paper. They don't write very well on paper that's too textured so I'm having to go over the same line more than once. Occasionally I'll get out a fine brush with pigment ink for the thicker lines but I use pens for the finer lines.

I'll probably add some watercolour later, which I can do with pigment ink without smudging the line work.. unlike regular ink...

Another work in progress - no title

Working on this on and off for a while. The stippling is taking a  while so it's probably going to take another week

Vulture in a suit (updated)

I wasn't happy with the flat brown background that I had for this picture so I decided to change it to an old paper textured background. I think it works much better.

Artline pen drawing. Had this idea from the previous sketches I posted and finally got it down today. Wanted to try adding a bit of red ink to it but I'm not sure I pulled it off well enough...

So now it's back to the commission I'm supposed to be working on, hehe.

sketches for future pieces.

Trying out some ideas for some new work. Some of this is trying out different ways for shading, some is patterns and so on. One thing that I've started doing is making sure I don't rush my lines which I've been guilty of in the past. Especially when it comes to shading. Making slower deliberate lines seems to yield better results. I've got a lot of ideas brewing in my head at the moment and I hope to get around to trying them out.

patterned skull (in progress)

I've started trying out different ways of rendering objects using lines and patterns. All this takes me back to pencil and pen for the time being although digital is equally applicable to this method.

A bit of a quick environment with a photo reference used. Good practice for finding brushes that give a texture with the least brush strokes

Another wave

Tried to paint another wave in photoshop. Wanted an oil paint look to it and I think I got closer than before. I used a photo reference but I can't remember who it's by. If anyone objects to showing this, let me know.

A four hour pic

Sat down today with the idea that I'd do a quick practice at drawing an animal since it's something I don't do (I'm almost always working at drawing people). This one took 4 hours with a short break in the middle. I guess I could have finished it a bit better but I decided it would do since I had some other things to do.

Sometime soon I'll post the process that a piece goes through (a step-by-step, if you will)

Heart strings

This is an old pic I did around 5 years ago and posted on my deviantart page. I decided to redo it to show the difference a tablet and 5 years or practice (on and off, heh) can make. The thing is you never stop learning. I still learn something new whenever I spend long enough working on something.

I'll dig up the old one and add it later.

I thought I'd do an experiment in speed painting but I tried to clean it up a bit in the end. I think there were some things I liked when it was more rough and sketchy.

The hair is what turned out the best since I've never really been good at that part of portrait type stuff. Anyway ... Might try something completely different for the next one.

First post for 2013

Started a bit of a fan art piece. It's of Dominic West as Jimmy McNulty from The Wire. I usually just post a piece when it's done, but since I think this will take a while I'll post it step by step.

I've started out with just black and white to make it easier and faster to get the tones right, then I'll get to coloring it a bit later.

Here's what I've got for a rough sketch
